How Amazon mud turtles hibernate

2020-10-31 / 180 Read

The ideal hibernation temperature for Amazon mud turtles should be between 7-10C, which can vary slightly higher or lower. Exposing Amazon mud turtles to too low temperatures for extended periods of time can kill the turtles, and too hot they may not go into hibernation at all. When the temperature is lower than 15C, the Amazon mud turtle will enter the hibernation state. If you are not ready to let it hibernate, the temperature should be kept at 22C-30C.

If the temperature is lower than 15C and you don't want the turtle to hibernate, then the temperature should be gradually raised, and the temperature should not be raised too fast, and it should not be fed during the transitional period when the temperature is neither too high nor too low. Feed the turtles in a 20C-30C environment.

How

The best time for Amazon mud turtles to keep hibernating is 3-4 months. Turtles in the wild generally stay in hibernation longer, but in captivity, shortening the hibernation time will not adversely affect their health.

If the breeder wants to check the hibernation health of the turtle, it should be done at least once a month, unless in a very special emergency, the breeder can disturb a hibernating turtle. This kind of inspection can only be done occasionally, and it must not be done often, otherwise it will disturb the hibernation of the turtle, so that it cannot fully enter the hibernation state, so it is difficult to achieve the purpose of making the turtle enter hibernation. Excessive interruptions are likely to increase hibernation mortality in turtles.
